I have a few people each month contact me in search of the best doula certification to embark on their journey in becoming a doula. We also have clients ask us every now and then “what is your certification and why was it the one you chose?” I want to spell out doula certifications for you in this blog to help everyone better understand what it is, what it looks like and how we get to where we are.
Most people find themselves interested in becoming a doula after their own birth experiences. Maybe they felt empowered and strong during their labor and want to help other women feel that way too or they felt the opposite and want to make no one experiences what they did. Either way, theres usually a story behind someones journey.
Many doula certifications are now online due to Covid-19 but a hands on training is what I always suggest if possible.
Doula work is a hands on profession so learning hands on techniques and the proper way to talk to and work with laboring women, is critical for a doulas development and education. Once you know what type of training you are looking for, it’s time to do some research! There are definitely some “main” certifications out there that have been fairly streamlined and are commonly known. These can be a great option but buyer beware, they can also be very difficult as far as customer service and human resources. The ability to get ahold of a real person is one of the most important things to look for when looking into a training.
Make sure that the certification aligns with your belief system. If you are a religious person, a religious training may be for you. If you are not, you may look at something less religious focused. Either way, you will find your niche in this great big doula world! There is a family for every doula out there!
Now potential clients, I want to share an analogy with you. Let’s say you hire an accountant. You LOVE this accountant. They do their job, they are personable, they are on top of things and you really click with them. Then you find out that they studied at a school out of state. How would this affect your relationship with your accountant. Probably not at all! Hopefully not at all because it really doesn’t matter! Did they do the work to get the degree? Are they awesome at their job?
Great! Keep the accountant!
The same goes for a doula. There are very few reasons why someones certification and training would interfere with their ability to take care of your family. If they are personable and capable of doing their job, you are in good hands! Get references from friends, family and the community. People won’t sugarcoat their experiences if you ask.
If a doula truly loves the work, they will continue to seek out learning opportunities, grow and become a better and more full support person for your family! Ask them about their training, what they did and didn’t like. Get to know then and trust your instincts. You are going to be great!
