Diastasis recti: A word that strikes fear in many a postpartum women. What is Diastasis recti and why is it so frustrating?
Diastasis recti is the separating of your abdominal muscles which can often occur during pregnancy. As your belly grows there is a normal amount of separation in your abdominal muscles because they were meant to do that! The left and right sides of your abdomen are not connected but they are close together. During pregnancy, with added stretch and strain on your abdominal muscles, the two sides can separate further causing a separation where the muscles should be together.
This separation can cause a lot of frustration and upset for women who are working on their health and fitness. It can be very difficult to bring the two sides of the abdomen together again.
Diastasis recti can also affect the strength of the pelvic floor after birth. Pelvic health post birth is extremely important. Kegels, strength training and pelvic floor therapy are things that you can start right away to help strengthen both your abdominals and pelvic floor.
If you are struggling with diastasis recti reach out to your OB or midwife. They may be able to give you some insight into what your body is experiencing and what to do about it. You can also check out in home training solutions like mutu system or Every-mother. Don’t let the problem go unaided especially if you plan to get pregnant again.
Taking care of your postpartum body, starts before pregnancy! Core strengthening and pelvic floor health are key to a happy belly during and after pregnancy!
