Most people go into birth with very little knowledge about birth. You probably haven’t seen many people give birth or heard many positive stories. Preparation is key to success when it comes to your birth priorities but are we prepping enough? Is a hospital class enough?
Most hospital birth classes are packed with information about the hospitals recommendations and protocols with some practical birth information mixed in. They cater to the average parent who may or may not have specific priorities about their birth. I always suggest to take the birth class offered at the location where you plan to give birth. It will help guide you and help you understand what to expect from the hospital.
I also always suggest that my clients read at least one book to aid in their birth education. Here are some of my favorites.
Ina May Gaskins: Guide to Childbirth (most appropriate for those seeking a non medicated delivery)
Theres also tons of fun and interesting books for dads! Dads have a whole other road block with pregnancy because they aren’t experiencing it! Its so difficult to understand what is going on in a women’s body when all you see is the outward appearance. Here’s a few of my favorite books for dads.
We’re Pregnant: The First Time Dad’s Pregnancy Handbook
Books are a great way to find the information you are looking for as well as open your mind to some other options that you may not have even thought about!
Lastly, private birth classes that are specifically catered to your needs can be so beneficial for your pregnancy and birth. My KC Doula offers pregnancy and birth classes that are taught with your needs as our highest priority. We will walk with you through the information that you are looking for and interested in so that you will be prepared and ready for your birthing experience! We can’t wait to work with you!
